Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875 - 1912) is Britain's foremost black classical music composer. A child with very modest beginnings in Croydon, near London, he nonetheless became a protege of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford at the then newly established Royal College of Music, and later the composer of hugely popular works such as Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. But behind the public face was a decent and modest man who campaigned for equal rights and also wrote chamber music of great sensitivity and charm. HOTFOOT 2008, in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall on Sunday 7 September [NB: 7 pm], is the twelfth such annual concert.
