BIG DRAW DAY

VENUE - OLD CHRIST CHURCH, WATERLOO ROAD, WATERLOO

.The 'Big Draw' is an international event, now in its 8th year, the purpose of which is to encourage children and adult to take up drawing and painting. Full details can be found by logging onto the web site www.thebigdraw.org.

This year, the Friends of Old Christ Church have agreed to host a Big Draw event on 'Big Draw Day' Saturday 13th October. The event will take place between 11am and 4pm at Old Christ Church, Waterloo Road, Waterloo. However, in order to make it the huge success we hope for, we need volunteer to act as stewards, helpers and general factotums.

Most importantly we need artists with the willingness to give up some their time to motivate and encourage others to try out various art forms, be it drawing or painting in various mediums either individually or in groups. We need artists who can share their enthusiasm and skills, and through demonstration and support, unlock a creative response from visitors. Although we already have ten professional artists participating we do need and would welcome more offers of help.

We envisage different ways by which we might influence drawing and painting activity:-
· Showing off skills – giving people an opportunity to see artists at works.
· Showing how its done – demonstrating techniques for other to try.
· Organising drawing activity – some activities suit individuals, while others will lend themselves to group interaction and collaborative effort.
· Helping others to draw – providing encouragement and suggestions.
· Provide workshops for more focused and directed activities.
· Drop-in sessions, offering prompts and suggestions to get people started.
· Free choice of activities with lots of encouragement and little direction.

The list of activities is not limited and we welcome suggestions from anyone who wishes to take part and share their enthusiasm with others.

As hosts we will provide all materials that are needed but naturally we shall need artist's wish lists at an early date to enable us to secure what is needed.

The planning of this event is still in the early stages and we shall post more information when plans are finalised.

If you wish to participate please contact John Bramham on 0151 924 5738, or by e-mail at johnbramham@uwclub.net. You may also wish to visit our web sit at http://oldchristchurch.tripod.com..

OMP make music over half-term for young people (and their parents & grannies)A 4-day music project, mainly for young people, to take place between Monday 22nd and Thursday 25th October 2007, during the school and college half term.

The project builds on the models of ‘Summer Music’ and of last year’s OMP - a musical performance created in a week – both produced by Dave Ellwand.

Project aims
To involve a group of participants from very mixed backgrounds in an exciting and challenging musical process leading to a high-quality performance.

Process
There will be 6 separate workshops running concurrently, each led by an individual workshop leader with a group of up to 12 participants. The workshop leaders are all experienced performers and teachers, who have particular expertise in working with musicians in a range of styles and genres.
OMP’S Musical Director, Jonathan Raisin, will guide the work from individual workshops towards a final performance piece.
The 4 day project will be based on two sessions of 2-3 hours a day culminating in a performance on the final evening.

Participants
As with Summer Music, we will welcome participants with backgrounds in a variety of musical genres. We have up to 72 places available and we are looking for a mixture of young people (13-18) and up to 18 adults (we’d welcome family members or potential workshop leaders.) We would hope that at least 75% of participants have some musical experience either as instrumentalists or vocalists, and will already be confident performers. We will aim for a workable mix of participants with wide backgrounds - orchestral playing, choral singing, jazz, improvisation, trad, folk, indie, rock, reggae … or any other music with style, soul and heart. The approach of the event is to build up a group with a shared commitment and enthusiasm, allowing anyone who’s less experienced or confident to participate fully and to gain equally from the project. Instrumentalists will be encouraged to bring their own instruments.

The project is also a chance to collaborate with other music providers, to introduce participants to a wider range of musical influences, including music from Ireland, Spain, Sweden, China & further!

Venue
The project will take place at the St Francis Academy in Gardner's Drive, off Sheil Road, Monday 22nd October to Thursday, 10.0am-4 pm each day. The final performance on Thursday will start at 6:45 & will last up to about 8 pm and !

Contents
We’ll arrange to cater for (almost) any instrument, and focus on effective ensemble creation. Participants will work alongside composers and be part of the process of devising & technical preparation for performance. The project ties in with many existing learning commitments in colleges, schools, orchestras and bands. It gives participants a chance to extend the applications of their existing skills, as well as to experiment. There will be many extras. There will be help for participants who want to use the experience as part of their planned learning, and they’ll get a DVD recording of their part in the project. For specific information about the teaching and contents of the project, and how it might help your students or band members, please contact Dave at pdellwand@hotmail.com.

The Big Questions on BBC1

Date: 28th October 2007

Time: 8.45am – 11am

Location: Central Liverpool

BBC1’s new flagship religious and ethical show is coming to Liverpool, and there’s an opportunity for 40 members of the public to come along and take part. ‘The Big Questions’ is to become THE place where the religious, moral and ethical questions exercising the nation are debated and explored. The show is hosted by one of the BBC’s best loved presenters, Nicky Campbell and will be coming live from different communities around the UK. It’s a forum in which beliefs, opinions and personal stories are shared and aired and where, ultimately, the nation’s complex moral make-up is explored.

The show will feature four respected panellists with a diverse range of religious and
ethical views. At the heart of the show is also the studio audience containing specially invited guests with relevant beliefs, opinions and personal stories that will be a major part of the debates.

As an audience member you will be right in the centre of the action as the week’s discussions unfold - you’ll get to see behind the scenes and find out a bit about how a live television programme is made. You may, if you wish, even get an opportunity to take part in the debate and share your experiences and opinions, though because of the number of people in the audience we cannot guarantee this.

On the day you will need to arrive at the location by 8.45am so that you can go through a brief security check and be told a bit about the week’s programme before being seated. The programme will end at 11am, after which you will be free to go. The show will be broadcast live between 10am and 11am on Sunday – so you’ll need to set your video recorders if you want to see yourself on TV.

Because we only have a limited number of seats and do not want to disappoint anyone you must reserve a place as soon as possible if you would like to come to the show. Please let me know by emailing hrobbins@mentorn.tv or calling 01865 318 476.

Many thanks,

Harry Robbins
