Foundation Degree in Community Arts recruiting now!

CALF, the Community Arts Learning Foundation for Merseyside and Cheshire is delighted to inform you of the launch of a new Foundation Degree in Community Arts: a programme we have developed with West Cheshire College and a wide range of arts and creative industry employers around the region for the last two years.

The programme, validated by the University of Chester, has been designed especially for people who are employed by cultural organisations (within the voluntary, independent or educational sectors for example) or freelance creative practitioners who wish to extend their future employment or educational prospects.

Students will work closely with members of CALF and be able to participate in relevant and real life community arts practice both within in West Cheshire College and 'out in the field' with CALF members. We're confident it will provide an education and training in Community Arts which is second to none.

If you have any further queries, please either contact myself at the Aspire Trust or Emma Lowe at West Cheshire College for further information and advice on 01244 670368 or via email: e.lowe@west-cheshire.ac.uk

Best wishes and thanks for your interest.

'celebr8 (don't discrimin8)' - The North West Celebrates Diversity with the sound of music - calling all musicians

The celebr8 (don't discrimin8) is hitting the north west again this year - the second installment of the annual regional festival demonstrating and celebrating how equality and diversity benefits our region will launch on 4th June and run until 11th June 2007.

celebr8 is calling all musicians and orchestras now, from any walk of life and any genre based in the north west, to create the celebr8 orchestra. Whether it's jazz, classical, pop or country or the violin, guitar, piano, recorder, hand pipes or African drums - all musicians are welcome!

Musicians need to be available for the whole day on Monday 4th June to tour the north west with celebr8, with the promise of fame, press and TV coverage. Chetham's School of Music will be directing the orchestra and composing a piece of music especially for the celebr8 orchestra to learn and perform.

Orchestras and artistes that can not make the whole tour, but would like to take part, can simply join the celebr8 orchestra in their home town at one of the whistle stops.

The aim of the eight day festival, supported by North West Regional Assembly together with other regional agencies, is to highlight the positive impact the eight diverse communities - race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, age, transgender, faith and beliefs and refugees/emerging communities - has on the cultural life and economy of the region. Equality is not a minority concern as the majority of people in England's North West are in one or more of these categories, or will be at some time in their life.

The festival will commence on 4th June with a one day, whistle-stop regional tour by the celebr8 (don't discrimin8) Orchestra. The orchestra will perform at key city-centre sites in Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria, with the expert musical guidance of the world famous Chetham's School of Music.

Please call Helen Conyers on 0161 817 6600 or email helen@tangerinepr.com for more information or to book your place on the celebr8 fun bus!

A full breakdown of all the events and activities taking place throughout the whole region will be released in the weeks prior to the festival. Anyone wishing to stage their own event can find more information by logging onto www.celebr8.org or by calling the celebr8 hotline on 0161 817 6608.

The Big Picture - Different but Equal

To end the festival and to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the people that make up the North West region, celebr8 (don't discrimin8) will bring together portraits of people and communities right across the region. We are asking everyone from the North West to send in a portrait of themselves which will then be displayed as temporary art installations. The portrait can be a drawing, photo or computer image, or anything else, as long as it is flat and the weight of a piece of paper.

Portraits can be sent by email (celebr8@tangerinepr.com) or by post (celebr8 (don't discrimin8) c/o Tangerine PR, Giant's Basin, Potato Wharf, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4NB).

If you want to run your own event for celebr8 within 4th - 11th June - please let us know and we'll help publicise your event, starting off by adding the details to the celebr8 website.

WORLD CANALS CONFERENCE - LIVERPOOL, 13-15 June 2007

If you a planner, developer, regeneration officer, academic or volunteer with an interest in inland waterways then this is a conference for you!

The annual World Canals Conference brings together hundreds of waterways enthusiasts, professionals and scholars from around the world and aims to identify the key elements and contributors required in the creation of sustainable waterside communities.

Using Liverpool and other successful projects, the conference seeks to underline the value of involving volunteers and the community sector alongside professionals when designing and delivering a waterfront regeneration of any type and scale.

Continuous Professional Development status has been secured for the conference, via The CPD Certification Service and The Inland Waterways Association is focused on delivering an inspiring, productive and educational event, providing a platform for senior speakers from organisations such as British Waterways, English Partnerships and English Heritage.

The conference opens with a day of plenary sessions examining the UK waterways renaissance over the past 60 years, its legacy and the influence of community and volunteer organisations working alongside the professional sector. The speakers then look at partnership working to secure funding, both UK and abroad, and in the afternoon examine the benefits and challenges of sensitive, sustainable regeneration and the wider social and environmental benefits integrated waterway regeneration can deliver.

The second day offers a guided study tour to successful projects in the North West, including the work in progress for the Liverpool Link canal development in the heart of Liverpool’s docks.

The final day is very much focused on the practical; developing tourism, the significant role of community and volunteers in successful waterside projects and the positive role waterways can play in active societies.

For more information and to book online visit the website - www.wcc2007.co.uk

This conference is an opportunity for both you and the teams you need to engage.
